The Full Story
Welcome to the official website of the Dragon Canoe Polo Team, established in 1972 by Iain Williams. Our team has a rich history of success and achievement in national and international competitions.
The Dragon Canoe Polo Club was established by Iain Williams, a designer and builder of the most successful competitive RFG canoe polo of the day, the Dragon Bat. In the early days, the athletes were always drawn from the South Wales area of local clubs like GVP and Bridgend. Guest players have always been an integral part of the team's selection process, providing a platform for social polo players who liked to play for fun but often do not play with teams who allow a laid-back approach to the game.
In recent years, the team has drawn players from other clubs, which has helped provide more consistency in results. Today, Dragon has a more regular line-up and this has provided more consistency with results at the top of the sport.
Dragon have won an impressive list of national and international titles over the years. They have won seven successive Welsh National League titles, the Welsh Open, the Liverpool and Hull International in the UK, the Irish Open, the Ypres International, and the Charleroi International in Belgium, the Fribourg International in Switzerland, and the Cup of the North in Canada, as well as many other events.
Dragon currently has teams playing in the British National League, the Welsh National League, and the South West Regional League. The Dragon A team currently plays in the Premier open league, the top division in the UK national league setup, whilst the B team play in division 2, and Ravens in division 3 of the national league. Each year, they attend around ten international tournaments, showcasing their skills against the best teams from around the world.
